Squirrel bristles are the softest, Sable bristles are the most durable while synthetic blends offer greater hold and resilience. While there is a vaster selection of brushes out there, choose a quality brush. Look for quality as your brushes and tools can last a lifetime if you take care of them. In particular, there are specific factors that should be considered. Brushes should be soft to the touch, minimal bristle breakage or fall out and dense for lasting quality.
The "best brush test", in which you ask yourself whether the brush feels soft or prickly. Which would you rather on your face? Are the hairs holding? Does the metal part feel sharp to touch along the edge meeting the bristles? If so, it will gradually break and cut off your bristles. When you pull on the bristles away from the handles does it feel secure? There should be no give in the brush, if it does it's too loosely glued and will fall apart.
New brushes are known to shed a little, but if too many hairs come out, they have most likely been manufactured poorly and will not last a lifetime no matter how much you care for them! Spend the extra on these items, that's why they're called 'artist tools of the trade' it's impossible to do great makeup without the right tools.
